Second Chance
This is an abstract of the kiawe tree at the House Without a Key at the Halekulani Hotel in Waikiki, Hawaii. The tree, 150 years old, is part of the history of this place. Each evening Hawaiian musicians and a graceful hula dancer have dancer beneath her canopy of leaves. One day in 2016 a storm blew across the island and uprooted many trees who saw their last days in the sun. But the hotel so treasured this tree they hired an arborist to try to help her. Fortunately she had fallen on her side laying on a big branch. It didn’t look good but the hotel felt they would keep her there, a part of the history of the House Without a Key. The musican’s played by the trunk, the hula dancer danced. And an amazing thing happen that branch grew roots and leaves began to grow. Perhaps it was the magic of the music and dance. We just don’t know. But we do know the kiawe tree still is there full of life and joy.
